This was taken today, August 25, at Hobby Lobby. They have fucking Christmas trees already!

Behind this cut is a video of five women in Kenya being burned alive for being witches. Seriously. People still believe in witches in the 21st century. And don't give me any "it's Kenya, what do you expect?" crap. They've got something capable of recording a video, they should know better.

09:03 am - Remembering The Holocaust, And Its Deniers
Remembering The Holocaust, And Its Deniers, by Evan Bernstein

Tuesday, April 21 is Yom HaZikaron laShoah ve-laGvura, “Remembrance Day for the Holocaust and Heroism”. This day is observed as a day of commemoration for the approximately six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust. In Israel, it is a national memorial day.

As a boy growing up in a reformed Jewish home, Hebrew school on Wednesday nights and synagogue on Saturdays were part of my upbringing. As winter turned to spring each year, the discussions in the classroom and in the temple were that of Holocaust remembrance. Jewish children are exposed to both the horrors and history of the Holocaust at a very early age. By extension comes the learning of the broader history of Adolph Hitler, and the even broader history World War II. Eventually, these young and inquisitive minds delve, quite logically, deeper into even larger questions, such as “What was World War I”? There is practically no limit to how far you can extrapolate questions that stem from those world-altering events of the 20th century.

Hooray for the weekend after seven straight. They cut our hours yet again. I thought more business meant more hours. Odd how that doesn't seem to be the case sometimes. Our assistant manager will be working part of the nights with us. He says he's doing it because things aren't getting done to his satisfaction. I think it's a good idea. Now he can see some of the things that go on at night, and why things aren't getting done.

Scipio molted again. There's a little shrimp suit lying crumpled on the bottom of his skullcave. The water won't quite clear up. I did a water change last week, and thought that would do it. I probably will do another one. The hornwort is growing like mad. It took a couple of months for it to catch, and Frankie has uprooted and destroyed most of it, but three of the stalks that are left are have almost reached the top of the tank. I can't wait to get a gigantic tank to put all kinds of shit in there.

It's fucking snowing for three hours now. In May. Today is one of the Festivals of the Bona Dea. Where can we find a pregnant sow? I ordered some books for the wifey, and some Roman shit for myself: some cookbooks and some books about the army from 100 BC to AD 200. Isn't that the right positioning for those abbreviations? I downloaded Tin Soldiers: Julius Caesar. This is the best game I've played since before I got tired of Madden NFL. I'm going to buy the vifey a new computer too. Hers is dead.

Send me love.

Today is my birthday. Woot. I celebrated by giving myself a four-day weekend. I spent most of the time sick in bed, though, so happy birthday to me. We went out for Indian and Mexican, and got Asian take-away. We also discovered that the Asian place now delivers. That is going to come in handy. The Raiders gave me a victory over the Broncos. They love me. I won a bet with my boss over that one. My darling wife bought for me an electric griddle. Now I can make grilled cheese for her.

As an aside, this flagging system LJ made is not a freedom of speech issue. LJ is not the government. LJ is not bound by the Bill of Rights with respects to its subscribers. If LJ wants to force everyone to post in English and disallow the use of the letter "k," they can freely do so. It would suck and they would lose most of their subscribers, but they can do it if they want. I personally think the flagging system is going to suck and that LJ is making another mistake. You can protest, write letters, flee to deadjournal, or whatever, but stop crying "free speech," because it doesn't apply here.

And it's not supposed to be 70°F the day before my birthday. Send birthday pictures to make it better.

Love,

Billy

And we got a new washing machine, so no more laundromat for us. Woot.

Here's to you!

Sucking my dick.

I'm shooting rum with [info]ninvampiress and listening to music (currently "rock and roll nigger" by patti smith). We were sucking on our friend Jose Cuervo, but he ran dry, so now we're fellatiating the Captain. We're malypyta or graey42 on yahoo and ninvampiress or graey42 on AIM. Talk to us!

Nothing else has died in the fish tank of death. Pete keeps giving me a scare by taking day long naps, but he seems to be ok the rest of the time. I made my mama's corn bread dressing for dinner today. I made two pans and ate about 20% of one of them already. I had to taste it to make sure it was ok, right? I think I've decided to just leave the smaller one here. We'll need something to eat with the leftover turkey. We also made a blueberry pie last night, but we're not sharing it.

Here's last year's rant on Thanksgiving preparedness for those of you who think your holiday has been ruined by the local grocery store not having what you need to make Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday morning.

And helping a couple of cute, bouncing, teenage girls find fake fingernails is a good way to boost an old man's spirits, and make him feel really old at the same time.

Happy Thanksgiving, Live Journal.

I just slept for about 15 hours. It felt nice. I chugged a bunch of NyQuil about 2pm, and crashed about 3. [info]ninvampiress tried to wake me up about 10pm, but I wasn't having any of it. I went back to sleep, and she watched some tele. I woke up about 5am, and soon it'll be time for her to wake up, so it all worked out.

I started filling out that Valentine's Day survey, but I got bored with it in short order. There are a couple of questions about love, lust, and love at first site, and I wanted to point out that they're all shades of the same thing. Most people try to drive a wedge between love and lust, saying that love is somehow better or more real, and that lust is just getting a hardon, or something along those lines. It's all just measuring one's fondness for someone or something. You love your parents, spouse, and pet, but they're not all the same type of love. You also love hamburgers, American Idol, and running in the rain. The list could easily grow into the thousands. Of course your feelings for ham and pineapple pizza are not the same as your feelings for your wife of 20 years, but they're both called "love", because that's what we've chosen to call preferential fondness for something. Just because most of us think "lust" is supposed to be inferior to and separate from "love" doesn't change that, in fact, one is just an intense and often short lived version of the other.

I need tea.

12:49 pm - A few words about Thanksgiving (and other holidays).
I work in a grocery store, so I see how little planning some people do. 7:00 AM Thanksgiving morning is not the time to be shopping, especially for Thanksgiving dinner, things like running out of bread or milk aside. People come into the store with entire shopping lists and expect us to have everything. To be sure, there are things that should be made at the last minute for freshness, but not pies, for example. There is absolutely no reason other than lack of planning for someone to be making a pie Thursday morning. People buy turkeys Thursday morning. Lack of preparation on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part. It would be extremely difficult for me to care less about you not having pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving if you're trying to buy ingrediants 3 hours before it has to be made, and getting uppity with me because you didn't plan ahead.

That having been said, if having to buy regular Cool Whip instead of Extra Creamy Cool Whip is going to ruin your holiday, you don't get holidays. Specifics of holidays notwithstanding, they're about enjoying spending time with family and friends. If an insignificant part of dinner is going to cause disaster, it's time to re-evaluate your world view. Stop worrying about french cut green beans versus regular cut green beans, go back home, and be with your family. And learn how to cut your own damned beans while you're at it.

And I hope all of you had a good Thanksgiving. *kiss*
